Beginning Silversmithing with Molly Sharp
May 22 & 23 , Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm
Tryon Arts and Crafts will host a Beginning Jewelry Silversmithing weekend workshop with instructor Molly Sharp. The two-day workshop will be held on Saturday, May 22, and Sunday, May 23, at the craft school located on Harmon Field Road.
Silversmithing is the art of turning silver and gold sheet metal into hollowware, jewelry, flatware and other articles of household silver. This jewelry workshop will give students the basic principles of the craft and an introduction to the necessary tools. Over the course of the weekend, students will develop good tool habits as they learn to use them in an efficient and comfortable manner.
Basic skills covered in this workshop will include sawing, piercing, drilling, sanding, filing, forming and bending. Students will also try their hands at stone setting, finishing, and soldering. Using these skills, students will then etch patterns onto metal sheets and use these patterned sheets to fabricate unique rings, pendants and earrings. In addition, the workshop will explore tools needed to get started, how much the initial investment will cost, and where to get your supplies and stones.
The instructor, Molly Sharp, a well known jewelry artist, lives in the mountains of WNC with her husband, potter David Voorhees. They opened Hand in Hand Gallery in 1996 in Flat Rock, NC. It carries unique works from over 100 local and regional artists. Molly’s journey into metalsmithing and jewelry making began in England over 25 years ago. Her style evolved into a reflection of her own experiences as a woman and her love for the materials. She creates patterns on the metal using the acid etch process, then transfers to metal by passing through a rolling mill. She often incorporates the hydraulic press and keum-Boo into her work.
Advance registration is required. Payment is due at the time of registration. The cost of the workshop is $135 for members ($145 for non-members). There will be a $30+ materials fee due to the instructor at the time of the workshop. Toregister please call (828) 859-8323. Payment may be made by mail, in person or by phone with a credit card.
