Silver Etching & Fabrication with Keum Boo demonstration

November 1 & 2, 2008

Saturday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm / Sunday 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

No previous experience with metalsmithing is needed to attend this metalsmithing workshop. In this workshop students will acid etch brass plates with hand drawn patterns, then use these patterned plates to texture silver pieces to fabricate and complete a bracelet. The instructor will provide a demonstration of the Keum-Boo technique, a Korean technique, of fusing 24K gold foil to fine silver.

The instructor, Molly Sharp, lives in the mountains of WNC (Saluda) with her husband, potter, David Voorhees.  They opened a gallery in 1996 in Flat Rock, NC called “Hand in Hand Gallery”.  It carries over 100 local and regional artists’ work and can be found on the web at handinhandgallery.com.  Molly’s journey into metalsmithing and jewelry making began in England over 25 years ago where she lived from 1971 to 1981.   Her style evolved into a reflection of her own experiences as a woman and her love for the materials.    She creates patterns on the metal using the acid etch process, then transfers to metal by passing through a rolling mill.  She often incorporates the hydraulic press and Keum-Boo into her work.
