Description

From molds and deckles to casting and pigments, this workshop is an exploration of the magical world of handmade papermaking.  Students will begin with a brief lesson in the history and contemporary uses of papermaking while learning about molds and deckles, options for beating pulp, and laying even sheets.  The students will create their own custom pieces of paper using pigments, natural dyes, flowers, scraps, and collaging and layering the paper.  The class will leave with a broader knowledge of the environmental advantages of hand papermaking and how to develop their own sheets of paper from natural fibers and recycled paper waste.  A portion of the workshop will introduce the wonders of paper casting with clay molds, wires, and small objects, promoting students to bring the pulp into 3D.  Students will leave the class with unique sheets of paper, paper reliefs, and small vessels.  This class is open to all levels.  Feel free to bring old receipts, scraps of paper, flowers, dead leaves, or a disposable small object to add to your exploration of paper.

Materials fee: $25 to be paid to the instructor at the time of the workshop.

Kate Timbes is a South Carolina based interdisciplinary artist whose work investigates the narrative and functions of materiality. Working primarily in sculpture, painting, and video, she weaves mediums
together, carrying objects, paint, seeds, weavings, and sculptural handmade paper through physical, emotional, and digital landscapes. Timbes contemplates sourcing of resources, rethinking use as an
individual effort to engage in a curious ecological practice. Timbes has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, with recent exhibitions at Visalia Arts Center, the Richardson Family Art Gallery, the
Spartanburg Public Library, and the DIS Student Hub in Copenhagen, Denmark. In addition to her studio practice, Timbes creates public artworks to engage with local communities, social histories, and urban
spaces. Timbes received her BA in Studio Art from Wofford College in 2023, completed a Work-Study Fellowship at Arrowmont School of Craft in 2025, and is a current member of Zero Space Collective
