Description

Build a Sculptural Side Table

Beginner level course

Each student will build their own side table, custom designed for this class to highlight different aspects of carving and shaping solid wood.  Construction will be accomplished through a combination of both hand and power tools.  Although a design and material cut-list will be provided for this project, there will be room for individual expression.  We will explore ways to construct an overall form within a piece of furniture consisting of multiple parts and pieces through the blending of soft edges and hard lines.  Topics covered will include design considerations with curves, practical ways to achieve precise layout and joinery in curvilinear workpieces, tools and techniques for carving and shaping wood, as well as glue-up tips and tricks.

Students Must Bring:Unmilled wood (optional), personal safety equipment

Material fee: $250 (or bring your own lumber)

Brian Fireman’s education in architecture was fueled from an early age fascination with building. Upon graduating with a BS in Geology from The Colorado College, he spent much time traveling and kayaking around the world. On returning to the United States, Brian earned an MA in Architecture from Virginia Tech. While at Virginia Tech, he became intrigued with the tectonic nature of building, where the forces generating a particular structure are revealed through a combination of construction and materials. Fireman’s summers were spent building and raising hand-cut timber frame structures where he learned about the diverse traditions of woodworking and joinery. While working for a high-end residential architecture firm, it became clear that he missed a truly hands-on approach to both designing and building, and in 2003 Brian Fireman Design was founded. Brian’s work has been exhibited nationally and published in a variety of magazines. Brian works from his studio in the mountains of western North Carolina.
