Intermediate to advanced
From toweing onggi pots in Korea to elegant coil pots from Central Mexico, coil building is one of the earliest methods to create ceramic vessels.
In this three-day workshop, we will cover the basics of coil building with both small and large coils to achieve a variety of sizes of vessels. Students will learn controlled techniques to achieve vertical pots, as well as methods to maintaining wall thickness with even pinching.
A beginner understanding of clay is recommended for this class.
Students must bring:
- heat gun or small propane torch – this is a MUST
- Basic pottery tool kit (can be found at www.clayking.com)
- Sketch book
- Scoring tool
- Wire cutter
- Rubber ribs (red, yellow, green are recommended)
- Paddle(can be found at www.clayking.com)
- Metal ribs
- small sponge
- ruler

- banding wheel

Sam Oliver has worked in clay for the past 13 years. She attained her Bachelor’s in Fine Arts from Winthrop University, Rock Hill, SC, in 2013, her Post Baccalaureate from William & Mary, Williamsburg, VA in 2015, and has participated in several residencies such as Penland School of Crafts and Arrowmont School of Crafts;.
