Description

All Skill Levels – Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

In this 6-week course, students will learn about the history of photography and create photos based on techniques learned from the various time periods. The intent is to expose the student to new and different photographic movements that will inform their own work and allow them to grow as artists. Learning from the masters will help them to become masterful themselves!

Historical Foundations:

We will delve into six influential photographic movements, examining their origins, key figures, and the profound impact they had on society’s perception of photography.

Creative Application:

Building on this historical foundation, students will actively engage in the creative process by producing original photographs inspired by each movement.

  1. Pictorialism: Experiment with early photographic techniques by creating images using pinhole cameras or Diana cameras.
  2. Abstract: Explore the power of form, color, and composition to create non-representational images.
  3. Surrealism: Delve into the realm of dreams and the subconscious, creating photographs that challenge reality.
  4. Documentary: Capture the essence of everyday life and tell compelling stories through images.
  5. Fashion: Explore the interplay of fashion, art, and photography, creating striking and innovative portraits.
  6. Street: Capture the dynamic energy and fleeting moments of urban life.

The instructor will provide guidance and demonstrations, including techniques such as attaching pinhole lens adapters to existing cameras.

At the finish of this 6-week discovery, the students should be inspired and invigorated to approach their own photography practice with new knowledge and enthusiasm.
