MORE ABOUT THE MUSICAL PERFORMERS

Blue Ridge Rounders, Bob & Amy Buckingham

The Blue Ridge Rounders of Upstate of South Carolina have been playing together since 2002. They are featured at festivals and concerts through the summer months and teach at workshops and week-long music camps such as PacJAM in Tryon and Blue Ridge Old-Time Music Week at Mars Hill College. Their old-time style intertwines the banjo, fiddle, guitars, and the singing of ballads to deliver a new voice for the traditional South.

Overmountain Old Time String Band

Overmountain Old Time String Band is an open acoustic jam and performance group playing traditional music of the southern Appalachians. They meet on the first and third Mondays of each month in an outdoor, COVID-friendly environment until they can meet indoors again. They love to perform for various community events, churches, and assisted living venues in the Carolina foothills.

Will Trakas, Eli Winkenwerder & Jake Yochem

Will Trakas (mandolin), Eli Winkenwerder (banjo), and Jake Yochem (bass) are musicians from Western NC with a background in bluegrass, folk, and old-time music. Though brand new to each other as a group, the three have played many shows in the region in various projects, with Winkenwerder and Yochem having gone on numerous tours over the last ten years with their main outfit, The Jackson Grimm Band, including several international runs with a traditional Appalachian dance group from Mars Hill University. Will Trakas is a local to Tryon and has played in various projects over the last five years in Asheville and the surrounding area. The three will play a mix of instrumental music and songs with vocal harmonies based on the style of music that was born out of the surrounding mountains. We hope y’all enjoy!

Blue Wall, Wandering Minstrel Performances

Derek Harrison and Becky Kraai came to Tryon in 2017 and formed their guitar and banjo duo, Blue Wall, named for the Cherokee’s name for the Blue Ridge Mountains. They perform songs from traditional folk and bluegrass to John Denver, James Taylor, Emmylou Harris and others. Venues include local farmers’ markets, assisted living homes, worship services, private gatherings, local holiday celebrations, and Harmon Field on warm Sunday afternoons. They come from teaching and non-profit data management careers, and thrill in the joy and harmonies created in learning and sharing old and newer music.

PacJam

PacJAM provides an opportunity for area youth to experience community through the joy of participating in traditional music.

Local students and their teachers are taking their part in a multi-state regional effort to preserve the music of the Appalachian cultural heritage, filling the air with guitar, mandolin, banjo, fiddle, and ukulele music each week. In addition to instrument instruction, students learn local music history and theory, ear training, dance, folklore, and rhythm development.

Now in its 8th year, PacJAM offers sessions each fall and winter/spring semester, as well as an intensive day camp one week each summer. Students of all skill levels ages 6-late teens, as well as adults, are invited to join us for instruction in traditional music.

Instructors in Spring 2021 include Gaye Johnson, Amy & Bob Buckingham & Woody Cowan.
