Civil War Author to Speak at Tryon Arts and Crafts

matterofconscenceSmallDr. J. Terry Hall, the author of A Matter of Conscience, will be speaking at Tryon Arts and Crafts School, during the Heritage Days Open House, March 23.

A Matter of Conscience is the story of a young man’s journey through the most turbulent years this country has ever experienced.  Growing up on the Cumberland River in south central Kentucky in the mid nineteenth century, Martin accepted slavery as a normal part of life.  Although the river was somewhat of a dividing line between large Tennessee plantation farmers who owned slaves and Kentucky farmers who had no need for slaves on their small farms across the river, arguments often ended in bloodshed as hotheaded men took the law into their own hands and spoke with a gun and a knife.  Martin, a man of peace, only wished to be left alone to raise his growing family, but fate intervened and he was thrust headlong into the bubbling brew that became known as the Civil War.

Dr. Hall spent forty years in public education as teacher and administrator in Tennessee, Kentucky and North Carolina.  After earning his Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, in 1988 he was appointed to the position of Elementary Curriculum Supervisor/Title 1 Director for the Asheville City Schools in Asheville, North Carolina where he served for nine years before retiring.

Dr Hall will be speaking at 11:00am, March 23 in the gallery of Tryon Arts and Crafts.  The lecture is free and open to the public.  He will be signing his book which will be for sale after the lecture and in the gift shop.

There will also be demonstrations of crafts by Tryon Arts and Crafts instructors and volunteers in each of the studios at the school including forging, weaving, woodcarving and turning, glass fusing, and pottery among others.  Visitors may also visit the current gallery show featuring the work of Tryon Arts and Crafts instructors and the gift shop will be open. The hours of the Open House are 10:00 to 4:00 on Saturday.
