Description

This is a youth educational program for  students under 10-14 years of age.  Each student must have an adult accompanying them.

This 4-hour workshop is a great option for folks who want to try blacksmithing for the first time and folks who want to know the basics of setting up a backyard smithy.  The instructor will cover the basics of using a coal forge and seven to ten metal working techniques.  Students will leave with a finished product, choosing from the following options: several types of hooks, dinner bell, fire poker, fire rake, or a candle holder.

The specific techniques included in this workshop are squaring, tapering, twisting, drawing out, backing up, fullering, upsetting, and correctly using the horn of the anvil.  There will be discussion on how to safely and properly use tools and maintain them as well as the basics of setting up a backyard smithy,  The instructor offers three size stocks for material which allows for her to accommodate any student.

Safety glasses to be worn at all time. TACS’ forge is an indoor-outdoor workspace, but mask will be worn at all times. Appropriate clothing, no polyblend pants or shirts. Boots or shoes, no tennis shoes. Gloves, prefer cotton not leather. Ear protection is recommended.
