Description

Intermediate level teacher demonstration workshop.  This is not a hands-on workshop.

Students should bring sketchbooks for drawing.  They should take notes either in the sketchbook or in an electronic device of their choice.  Students may NOT record video of this workshop.  This is a workshop for developing students’ understanding of how calipers are used to combine wheel thrown parts into completed pots.  Students will observe instructor demonstrations beginning with throwing parts, drying them a bit and finally assembling the parts into finished pieces.  The instructor will show how, by starting with a solid idea and/or sketches, parts can be assembled into larger finished pieces as well as more complex forms that are difficult or not possible to make from one part.  By making parts and allowing them to dry to soft leather hard consistency, parts can then be assembled into much more ambitious pieces.

These methods open up a new way of making pots, sculptural pots or sculptures.  The techniques may also be combined with hand built parts.  By developing accurate making techniques and measuring of parts, possibilities for greater expression in both sculptural and functional end products are possible.
